2/09/2010- Nourish thy mind

Try an experiment for three weeks.  The first week go about your days as you normally would. As you’re going about your day, ask yourself how you feel when you absorb a particular type of information, such as when you engage in conversation, watch TV, a movie, listen to the radio, etc.   Do you feel drained after reading or hearing something? Do you feel excited? Energized? Are you feeding on someone else’s drama?  Does it make you happy? Angry? Sad?  Just pay attention to your body and your feelings surrounding the intake activity.

Second week: Before you read, discuss, watch or listen to something, ask yourself: Will this nourish my mind toward what I want to know, achieve, believe or accomplish?  If you are engaged in a conversation that clearly will not give you something positive as a return, protect your mind as to how much you take in.  A good example is your friend or family member talking about an illness.  Another good example is watching television for distraction.  Is the program adding to your life? Is is making you smile? Is it making you feel good or bad about yourself? Is it giving you knowledge that you find appealing?  Is it scaring you?  Be cognizant of what you put into your mind and never underestimate the human mind’s sponginess. Once you have determined what you are feeling and whether or not it will nourish your mind, go ahead with the activity.  Once it is through, check in with yourself and ask; “Ok, how did that nourish my mind?”

Third week: For as much as you have control over, try to only engage yourself and your mind with things that nourish you positively.  Try as hard as you can to not put anymore junk (whatever you have determined as junk) into your mind.  Work toward finding intake activities that uplift, energize, educate and motivate you.  If you are doing something that all of the sudden starts to feel like a drag or drains you, shift to something else.

The mind just accepts things it sees and hears and integrates those things into your belief system about the world and yourself.  Be vigilant about what you feed it! It’s yours to nourish!

The power of thought and our own thinking is the most powerful gift we have.  Everything that is created by man was once an idea, a thought.
